Via @msdonica, a lovely interview with Claire Messud and James Wood, which led me, indirectly, to Wood’s famous review of Zadie Smith’s White Teeth. I don’t even know what to say about the review: it’s not cruel, in the scheme of things, and it’s probably not even wrong in a technical sense – I remember having some of the same reservations myself – but it’s so narrow. Why you wouldn’t throw a fucking parade for a first novel like White Teeth, which makes London seem like an actual living breathing human city. I guess James Wood isn’t in the business of throwing parades.
