I think I linked to this article about Kalief Browder, a black teenager from the Bronx, when it was published last year. Browder was imprisoned on Rikers Island, without trial, for three years – almost two of which were spent in solitary – because the city couldn’t get it together to try him for a crime he clearly hadn’t committed. He walked free, without conviction, in 2013.
After leaving prison he struggled desperately with his mental health and had attempted suicide a number of times. Yesterday, shockingly and yet awfully unsurprisingly, his mother found him hanged at their home.
