Ornette Coleman puts me in mind of Mark Simmonds, who I saw regularly in the 90s – I had a relative who played for a while in his band. He was heavily influenced by Coleman (I realised much later), but with a more abrasive (tenor) sound, and a notably aggressive physical presence. He came and went from the scene, I think perhaps because of addiction problems, but it seems that he’s permanently gone now. His double album Fire is one of the great Australian jazz records.
